NKA

Sodium-Potassium ATPase

Nearly every process in the body starts with the exchange of sodium and potassium by the sodium-potassium ATPase enzyme (aka NKA) to create a positively charged cell membrane. This charge is used for critical functions like nerve signaling, heartbeats, kidney function, and breathing. On a cellular level, NKA is essential to glucose uptake and water balance.

NKA Inhibition

A well know problem in shock

Research shows NKA Inhibition occurs after hemorrhage and trauma. This work has been confirmed by multiple methods in our lab and expanded, finding this occurs independent of oxygen delivery. Furthermore, the same problem happens in sepsis. However, the question remained, what is causing this NKA inhibition?
